Documentary photography follows a storyin-depth over a period of time. By deepening our understanding to stories, documentary photography can capture public attention and mobilize people aroundpressing social/human right issues.

Documentaryphotographers try to capture images that have the power to highlightstories that aren’t gaining sufficient traction or to amplify a diversity ofperspectives. They work to develop strong relationshipswith the people they photograph. They build this trust over time—byestablishing their intentions upfront, engaging repeatedly withpeople/communities and being open to having their assumptions challenged.

Such efforts enable photographers toacquire a more nuanced understanding of the issue they document, see past generalizations, stereotypes and become more sensitive to the cultural and political contexts inwhich they work. But in this 21st century, documentary photography has becomemore personal in nature. With escalating changes happening in photography, itis an hour of the need to mark a personal stamp of their artistry on theirwork.

Discovering a personal voice is acontinual process of exploration, understanding, critical thinking andexperimentation. It may take you a couple of years to discover and develop thatvoice. Finding a personal voice is not about style, but about exploringyourself through self-reflection and critical engagement. Hence, to guide youthrough this documentary photographer Taha Ahmad will be conducting a dayworkshop on 6th of October 2019, which will allow you to develop apersonal vision around the subject you are passionate about. The workshop willtake place at the C8-8 warehouse of Dayi area and is open for everyone abovethe age of 15.
