In the Chinese language, the International Art Village refers to a physically created space in which resident artists gather for a short or long term, allowing them to obtain the space and time to think and create. It is where they live, work, and create artwork. Through this interactive process, new creative energy is born. The Pier-2 Art Center has always been oriented toward modern, experimental, and highly creative directions. The international Pier-2 Artist in Residence (PAIR) project was launched at the end of 2014 with the hope that the gathering of international artists at the Pier-2 Art Center will give audiences a different artistic perspective, create an interactive showcase platform that belongs to the arts and culture, and provide the public with more opportunities to become engaged in the arts. The 1st quarter of the 2015 PAIR project is coming to an end. Four groups of artists from the Ukraine, Serbia, Japan, and Taiwan have emerged victorious out of the hundreds that took part in the auditions. After three months of residence, deep contemplation, and cultural exchanges, they will present their thoughts and experiences in Taiwan through their artwork to the audience. The number 19699 represents the total distance between the four home cities of the artists and Kaohsiung City. They have flown thousands miles to arrive in Southern Taiwan, where the warm climate, culture, and people of Kaohsiung have touched them deeply, and provided them with boundless inspiration for their artwork. In this exhibition, the artists from the four different countries will completely transform their thoughts into visually impactful artwork, via their documented records, observations, and sensitive spiritual perspectives. The spirit of contemporary artists will be expressed through their diverse and unrestrained composition methods. Let us come together to listen to their stories — both lengthy and brief — of their experiences over the past three months.
