▍Exhibition Concept
-Urban rhythms by Lauris Vitolins

Through "Urban Rhythms," Lauris aims to immerse the audience in the dynamic and multifacetedsound landscape of the neighborhoods around pier-2, creating a deeper researchfor the everyday sounds that often go unnoticed. The interactive installationinvites participants to explore the connections between localmaterials(abandoned furnitures on the streets), sounds, and their ownexperiences, encouraging them to reflect on the complex texture of urban life.

-Spinning step by spiral stairs by Ching-Yu Cheng

The space for artists to stay during the Pier-2 artist inresidence program features a spiral staircase that connects living space withthe studio. The usual horizontal movement where distressed creative thoughtsused to oscillate within the confines of a room on one level has transformedinto a continuous vertical motion through this spiral staircase.

Theexperience of traversing the spiral staircase day by day provides a uniqueperspective on indoor movement (hiking). The act of ascending or descending incircular steps offers a connection to different spaces, and the actions underthis spatial context while the times has dissected by the steps, start tointertwine with the gradual development of Ching-Yu’s creative processes.

The14 steps of spiral staircase deconstructed into 14 plywood pieces, is equippedwith wheels and can independently rotate on the same level as a completedcircle. Following the order given by the spiral staircase, sitting withineveryday, I draw on the plywood pieces placed on the stairs. The action of moving step by step (in terms of physicstair’s footstep and procedure under timelines) serves as a form of drawingpractice based on experiences in time and space.
