“If you build up a wall, someone will graffiti it; if you put on music, someone will dance; if you send out messages, someone will receive them; but ifyou do nothing, then nothing will happen.” – 4screenprint

During my residency at the Pier-2 Art Center, I temporarily pulled myselfaway from my role as a writer*, and took the perspective of an observer toappreciate the graffiti in Kaohsiung.

During the time of residency, I suspended my creative status and startedtracking down the graffiti done between 2017 and 2023 in Kaohsiung and markedthem on a map. Tracing the distribution and the footprints of these graffiti, Iattempted to discover the messages hidden behind the images and documents, figuring out the relationship and context between graffiti culture and the portcity Kaohsiung.

To the public, graffiti may symbolize rebellion and reaction. Like virusesand germs, they creep into, and even take over the whole city. However, it isprecisely in this process that the styles and culture of graffiti graduallymerge with the city and generate a unique landscape and urban aesthetics. Thestatus of graffiti is drifting. They shift from one wall to another wall, oncity to another city, and transfer from one point to another point throughactions. They are connected by the repetitive movements of traveling andwandering, and the map of graffiti gradually expands. At soundless and stillnights, there are a small group of people who roam around the city to fulfilltheir own commitments. It is the romance that belongs only to the writers aswell as a silent message sent to the outer world.

* “Writer” denotes the person who makes graffiti, which mainly involveswriting and signing.
