Red which dropped on tip of Black — Seiko Yamamoto Residency Exhibition

After arriving in Taiwan, as I proceeded my research for the artwork, I learned that more than 90% of the fishermen in Taiwan are immigrants from Southeast Asia.

Since I have been spending time with an Indonesian fisherman I happened to meet, I observed how he and the immigrant worker's community around him have been working and living in Kaohsiung. While they face many difficulties as immigrant workers, I firmly felt their deep affection for their families back home and the pride of their own cultures.

As an artist, I have worked with a variety of media; this time, I focus on "Photography" and "Iron" for my artwork. Iron is made initially from minerals, and rust is a phenomenon that occurs in the process of returning to its original natural form, the mineral. Since I saw a lot of red rusty iron boats in Kaohsiung, I would like to draw the scenery of the iron boats and the feelings of immigrant fishers thinking of their home through this work. I also find that fishermen's work is always with a kind of darkness, and there might be some similarities between their work and the process of developing and printing photos.

I often use the color to capture the nature of society and the environment surrounding my body. In this work, black and red (and white) appear in various forms in my work and each has a significant meaning. I hope that through this work, you will be able to sense a story that exists in the corner of Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

高雄に到着してからリサーチを進める中で、現在、台湾の９０パーセント以上の漁師が東南アジアからの移民であることを知りました。
そこで、偶然出会ったインドネシア人の漁師と、時間を共に過ごしながら、彼や彼の周りのコミュニティがどのように仕事をし、生活しているかを観察し、彼らを取り巻く現状には未だたくさんの困難があることや、その中でも彼らがいつも故郷の家族を思い、故郷の文化に誇りを持っていることを感じました。

私はこれまで多様なメディアを使って制作をしてきましたが、今回は「鉄」と「写真」に注目しています。鉄はもともと鉱物を原料としていますが、そこに起こるサビは、人工物となった鉄が元の鉱物という本来の自然な形に戻る過程において起こる現象だといいます。高雄でたくさんの赤く錆びた鉄の船を見たことで、その風景と故郷を思う気持ちを重ねて描いてみたいと思いました。また、漁師の仕事はいつも暗闇と共にあることを知り、それと写真を現像しプリントするプロセスにはたくさんの共通点があると感じました。

私は、これまで、自分の身体の周りの社会や環境を色を用いて捉え、制作してきましたが、今回の作品にも黒と赤(そして白)が様々な形で現れ、重要な意味を持ちます。
この作品を通して、台湾の高雄の片隅に存在するひとつの物語を感じ取っていただければ幸いです。
