“Recipe Evolution Movement,” a project initiated by the artist JenPei CHENG since 2018, looks into the issue of the multicultural society in Taiwan, discovers how cultures and their fusion are reflected on cuisines, and thus gives analogy with a broader and complex social structure of ethnicities in the contemporary.
For those who are in the relationship of transnational marriage, exchanges could take place in different and subtle layers, from simple daily dialogues between the two, to customs and cultures, or even values towards politics and economics. The artist has been interviewing with many foreign spouses in Taiwan, recording their dietary habits, preferences and possible dishes on their dining table, and trying to reconstruct flavors that might refer to both their hometowns and migration places.
Interviewees’ personal experience and daily dining option compose the image rearranged by the artist. The audience will have the opportunity to figure out these six new recipes infused with stories and memories.
