The paradise. Nature which cannot be obtained, which sets boundaries that cannot be crossed, became an inspiration for me. The relation between human and nature. With a dangerous ocean, mountains that block the passage, a forest that cannot be traversed, high temperature and humidity. Strong winds.

Kaohsiung, a place where nature and spirituality confront technique, industry, constant modernization and production. Dialogue between those two processes in both scientific and spiritual sphere lead to a constant destruction and the emergence of the new beginning. It is also a practical world, where everything has its place, size and shape, it is tailored, cut out, planned. Opposing the "limitation", I combine together fragments to build a whole new piece. With the help of people encountered in various places I try to save leftovers, disposed materials, that are no longer needed.

Reconstruction and rebirth of two processes that co-exist and are parallel. The process is a part of the exhibition. It is also my individual path, my own way of rebuilding reality from scattered fragments.

I’ve found a space for myself in this inaccessible paradise.

From those fragments I’ve created a new being.

A being that reflects my state of mind.

A being I can take with me back to my world.

And remember.

About the artist: Barbara Mydlak

Studied at Fine Arts Academy in Lodz, Poland. PhD candidate at Univerisity of  The Arts in Poznan, Poland.

In my work I focus on finding new ways to express. I combine different materials, substances, fibers and techniques. I use handmade paper obtained from different kinds of natural fibers. I mix the knowledge of craft work, science to develop my individual artistic expression and original methods to create my works. Changes related to the periodic renewal of the world intrigue me. The mystery of being born, death and rebirth, they all build the rhythm of nature. Infinite repetition of the same cycle, similar to how paper works are performed. The search is an ongoing process.
