This is a semi automatic drawing marked with repetitive strokes to create the patterns of what seemed like recognisable letters and numbers but in fact, gibberish. Spontaneously, stroke by stroke with the paint-marker, by the hand. Intentionally abstract, the markings create a pattern that formed these organic shapes resembling mountains around a valley—an apparent place. Yet, the negative space within these markings form a labyrinth and fictional maps of sort which reflects the recurring theme in my drawing practice. I see faces and creatures within this picture but what do you see? Look closely. For the artist, it is about the process—the act of drawing to discover, through the different stages of mental and physical challenges of what seemingly dull action of repetitively marking, and marking. But why, I cannot explain; however my works intend to promulgate the multiplicity of abstract conception as I crave for the beauty of ambiguity and awe of decipherment.  This is a valley in this Universe, but where…

about Juls

The main focus in my practice is to explore the subtlety of drawing, by the act of mark-making. I explore the variation of narratives with spontaneity and its automatic consequence as the primary methodology. I am in the process of discovering how I can translate a “mark” through different mediums to convey the unspoken words and of the subconsciousness. I make abstraction deliberate and in doing so, I am looking for a harmony and melody within these written vibrations and visual formations. In recent works, my drawings take other forms in order to experiment the possibilities of relevance in my practice; and in uncovering the recurring theme of repetition. Repetition by process and presentation. My works intend to promulgate the multiplicity of abstract conception and most importantly, to share with the audience the beauty of ambiguity and awe of decipherment.
