About Exhibition/

During the colonial period in Taiwan, manymixed multicultural buildings were left behind; such as the ones with a mixedstyle of Japanese and Baroque built under Japanese rule, and the Western-stylebuildings in light of foreign architectural style, etc. This project aims tovisit and shoot exotic-style buildings left from the colonial period arounddifferent cities in Southern Taiwan. As the living field for people,architecture reflects the changing traces of history and culture in the past. Havinggradually collapsed as time gone by, these abandoned buildings no longer havevalue and have been forgotten by era bit by bit, finally become a shadow of themonument to the past. The ruins massively generated under certain socialhistorical phenomenon also symbolize the fall of a certain event of the era.Through recording these ruins, we can get a specimen to peep at the historysituation. These monumental contemporary ruins show the changing of time andthe power of nature; the beauty of large yet broken, and the private history ofthe inhabitants. This series of works about ruins trace back to 2007, where Ishot abandoned houses in the East German. After German reunification, therewere lots of abandoned, uninhabited houses due to war damage, populationmigration and economic depression. I want to keep track of these dying ruinsand the historical stories hidden behind them. After this series of work, I re-viewedand re-thought about my own culture, hoping to return to the historical contextwhere I belong via creating, and discover the possible contrasts and dialoguesbetween cities with different culture and history.

About Artist/

Born in Tai-Chung, Yunyi Liu obtained her BFA from Taipei National University of the Arts in 2005, Diplom (equivalent to MFA) from Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle in Germany in 2010, and Meisterschülerin, the highest artist diploma from Burg Giebichenstein in 2014. Between 2011 and 2014, Liu held residencies in internationally renowned art villages such as Berlin, Jena and Schwalenberg in Germany, as well as Istanbul, Turkey and Taipei Artist Village. Moreover, Liu received S-An Aesthetics Award (Plastic Arts category) from S-An Cultural Foundation in 2013. Her works were also acquired by the Artbank of Ministry of Culture. She currently lives and works in Taipei and Germany.
